Here at Herbert Smith Freehills, we work to provide you with the skills and experiences that you need to succeed in your law career - wherever it may take you.

Our Graduate Program is designed to strengthen your knowledge, develop your mindset and hone your expertise by rotating you through three different practice areas for six months at a time. This will enable you to gain the breadth of experience that you need to become a trusted Solicitor and business advisor.

Graduate program

Before each rotation, you’ll have the opportunity to submit preferences for practice areas, enabling you to tailor your graduate program to your specific interests. These preferences can be discussed with our dedicated Graduate Recruitment team.

If you’re interested, you can also apply to complete an international rotation, or a rotation through our Digital Law Group or Legal Operations team during your Graduate Program.

At the end of your 18-month program, you can select the discipline that you would like to continue to grow your career in, allowing you to focus your development in an area that matters to you.

Key features of our Graduate Program include:

Close access to experienced people

Through each rotation, you will be allocated a supervising Partner, a coach (usually a Senior Associate), and a buddy (usually a Junior Solicitor). They will be responsible for providing work to you, giving you career development advice and being a point of contact for any questions you may have.

Streamlined steps towards success

As you enter a new rotation, you will be given a handover by the outgoing Graduates. They’ll cover things such as work, team style, and the best place to find important documents, making it easier for you to fit in and work effectively in your new team.

Constructive feedback

You will be encouraged to meet with your team regularly to discuss career objectives and performance feedback. This creates a culture of trust and develops a feeling of security and confidence in the work that you are doing.

Top-level Support

SIMPLY TELL US WHAT YOU NEED

We understand that life in a commercial law firm can seem daunting. That’s why we provide you with all the support that you need.

Once you join our Graduate Program, you’ll benefit from a comprehensive one-week induction, before completing ongoing practice group training throughout each rotation tailored to the team you are joining. With a solicitor assigned as your dedicated “buddy”, you’ll receive regular feedback, as well as extensive on-the-job support from other solicitors, senior associates and partners.

As you work towards admission as a Legal Practitioner in Australia, we support you by providing Practical Legal Training (PLT) and assistance throughout this important  process.

Once admitted, you will begin the second stage of your formal learning program – Advance. This program focuses on the client, financial and people skills that you will need to take you to the next level of your career.

At different times throughout your career, you may feel as if you need a change or a new challenge. This could mean developing new skills, setting a new direction, starting a new role within the firm, or taking a short break. While this may require you to change your focus, we believe that pursuing a new path should not mean that you have to close off others.

That’s why we are committed to redefining how we invest in our people as they look to pursue diverse personal and professional pathways, both at Herbert Smith Freehills and beyond.

Through our Career Pathways program, we will show you the countless personal and professional opportunities that are available to you, both inside and outside our firm. We will demonstrate how you can be supported and rewarded as you develop a wide range of skills and pursue various opportunities, and we will empower you to follow your own pathway, whatever that may be, with the firm’s complete support.

INTERNATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

As much of the work that we do has a cross-border element, our international offices often share a number of clients and work closely together to advise on multi-jurisdictional matters and regulatory issues.

With this, we recognise that international secondments provide considerable benefits to our clients, our firm and our graduates.

Now, with over 25 offices across Asia, Europe, Australasia and the Middle East, our international network allows us to offer exciting opportunities to graduates and experienced staff that are unrivalled in scope.

In 2014, we launched our international secondment program for Australian graduates to our Singapore, Hong Kong and London offices, and we continue to review and expand our secondment program as more opportunities become available.
